This project encompasses two buildings providing service facilities for Ziegler Caterpillar machinery. The main building is 47,388 sf and includes office space, a sales area, a parts warehouse, a maintenance shop with two overhead bridge cranes, and a steam bay. The secondary building is 7,862 sf used for cold storage.
Both buildings are pre-engineered metal building. Larson Engineering was responsible for the design of the foundations, an office mezzanine, two mechanical mezzanines with catwalks, a lube mezzanine, a wash bay catwalk, the bridge crane support beams, curtain wall support, and the entry canopy. The additional framing was all structural steel. Precast plank and wall panels were also used.
Due to the large thrust loads on the metal building frames, the buildings required tension ties in the slab. Extensive coordination was required with the architect, the contractor, and the metal building supplier.
