Grinnell-Newburg 2022 Synthetic Turf

Project Description:

The Grinnell-Newburg CSD 2022 Synthetic Turf project consisted of a synthetic turf system within and existing 8-lane athletic track and reconstruction of jumping events.

The field was constructed with a dual-fiber synthetic turf with thatch layer and alternating color panels. The perimeter of the field was striped with a 6’ wide white and a 6’ wide black border as well as permanently inlaid soccer markings. The turf was attached at the perimeter with a concrete nailer curb to transition the varying grade from the track to the field surface. The long jump was relocated from within the track along the straightaway to within the “D-Zone” on the northwest side of the field. The existing high jump was removed and reconstructed at the opposite “D-Zone” at the southeast portion of the field.

Larson Engineering Services:

Larson Engineering was hired alongside the architect and the construction manager and was involved from project inception/preliminary planning through construction administration. Larson Engineering assisted the owner in turf selection through turf tours of local facilities and by comparing the various turf products and companies. Larson Engineering also assisted with planning for additional facility improvements outside of the turf scope, including a new entry building, perimeter paving, and fencing upgrades. LEI then prepared civil plans and technical specifications for the project for inclusion in the construction documents manual. Due to a limited budget and the economic effects of the 2020 pandemic, several alternates were included around the site to allow owner selection of full scope on bid day. Larson Engineering’s construction administration services included virtual attendance of weekly Owner/Design Team meetings, shop drawing review, responses to contractor requests for information, creation of proposal requests / supplemental instructions as necessary, contractor pay application review, in person site visits when requested, and substantial completion / final inspection punch list reviews.
